Total Vein Care

Introduction to Vein Diseases

Vein diseases are complex. Patients present with different problems and the cause of the pathology can differ from patient to patient. In order to treat properly a patient, the physician has to understand the cause of the problem, and be able to choose from a variety of treatment the proper one for the particular patient. A complete work-up including physical examination and ultrasound test at the minimum has to be done. A physician that is experienced in only one modality of treatment (laser, injections, surgery) cannot provide proper treatment. If you want to receive the best available treatment, you should find a physician that has the ability to analyze expertly your condition and select the proper treatment for you.

Causes of Vein Diseases

Veins are the blood vessels that return blood to the heart from the body. To overcome the force of gravity, inside the veins are one-way valves which open to allow blood flow to the heart, and close to prevent “reflux” of blood back to the body. When these valves fail to function, or if the vein is damaged so the valves do not completely close, blood can begin to pool in the veins. This extra pressure called “venous hypertension” is the main cause of spider veins, varicose veins, stasis dermatitis and venous ulcerations. When this problem is localized in the saphenous vein that is the main vein draining the skin circulation, the branch veins stretch open and become varicose.
